Moving interstate is a challenge at the best of times, but if you’re a car enthusiast, you also need to consider how you’re going to get your vehicle to your new destination. While it's not so much an issue if you're just moving a few hours away, if you're moving from Brisbane to Perth, for example, you're going to have a big decision to make on how to get your car its destination.

Do you pack and settle in for a road trip, braving the unpredictable Australian roads across the desert, mountainous terrain and dry plains? Or do you trust a vehicle freight company to do the work for you? Let's look at the pros and cons of both.

Driving Your Car Interstate

If you really love your car, there's something thrilling about driving through unfamiliar landscapes. But the journey comes with a lot of effort and risks.

Pros: Some of the pros include flexibility, so you can run to your own schedule, and even include pit stops for sightseeing along the way. It's an adventure driving anywhere around Australia, particularly long distances, with coastal drives or bushland scenery providing exciting experiences along the way.

Cons: The downside is that the long-distance driving adds a lot of kilometres on your vehicle, which can increase the wear on your tyres, engine and suspension. Also, Australian roads are a lot more challenging than many people realise. You might face storms and road debris that can turn your adventure into a hassle. And let's not forget about kangaroos, which seem to be strangely attracted to headlights on dark outback highways!

Shipping Your Vehicle

On the other side of the argument, shipping your vehicle is an entirely different approach. The logistics are taken care of, and you'll have a professional service handling the heavy lifting.

Pros: One of the most obvious pros is the convenience. Once your car has been picked up by the moving company, you don't have to worry until you arrive at your destination. No need for endless hours behind the wheel, looking for food, fuel and overnight accommodation options in the middle of nowhere. You'll avoid the harsh weather, the potholes, and the kangaroos. You’ll also save time in the move — you can fly instead.

Cons: It's not cheap, depending on the distance and the service you choose (although it may be cheaper than you realise).  You also need to make sure you find a reliable interstate car transport provider, which can be a challenge. Always make sure you check online reviews and testimonials (not just on their website), get upfront quotes to ensure there are no hidden fees, ask for insurance details, and look for companies that offer specialty services, should this be required.

Whether you decide to take the wheel yourself or leave it to the professionals, think about it carefully well in advance of the move. And remember, regardless of the ‘how,’ the most important thing is that your car gets to the other side in top condition.
