Online Sports Betting in Australia: Laws, Rules, and Regulations

In Australia, Gambling has been defined and must involve staking of money and other valuable items and consideration on the outcome of an event. This can either be based on a whole or partial outcome with the intention or objective of winning a reward. Online gambling would, therefore, involve the aforementioned -but in relation to the online arena. Any online gambling activity that doesn’t fit this criteria cannot be generally considered as gambling by the Australian online sports betting rules, laws, and regulations.

Online gambling was not established until later in the late 20th century and has since continued to flourish despite the multiple actions taken by the government in an attempt to curb this activity. Therefore, whereas online gambling is absolutely legal in Australia, there are still some regulations in place that players engaging in online sport betting should be aware of.

We will take a closer look at some of them:

The Operator Rule

Operators such as australian betting agencies are generally defined as those who run the gambling sites. According to the Australian Interactive Act (IGA) passed in 2001, it includes a relatively long list of rules and requirements for operators based in the country.

For instance, IGA placed restrictions on offshore and onshore online operators against offering some forms of gambling to Australian locals. This made some forms of betting illegal -but with exception to sports and race betting. The latter was, however, only legal provided all bets were closed before any other match or race started. Operators based in Australia can still offer these restricted games to non-Australians across the world.

Even so, there’s not much to worry as a gambler as it’s no responsibility of yours to adhere to IGA regulations as they apply to the operators only. This means that if you don't own a site, there’s no reason whatsoever to bog yourself down trying to find out whether or not a site is following IGA directives. Get started with any form of betting; including afl multi betting, choose your preferred trusted site and get started.

Prohibition of In-Play Betting

IGA tends to extend the legislature outside Australia by prohibiting offshore gambling sites from accepting Australians -which has shown little success as multiple sites continue to accept Australians without much consequence.

IGA on the other hand has managed to place a firm grip against in-play betting and has received some level of success. In-play betting allows you to place short-term bets when an event is ongoing -also identified as live-betting. Even so, Australians still go for this form of betting offered by offshore online sports where IGA seems to have little to no effect.

Conclusion

Online gambling is legal in Australia and many residents partake in one gambling type or another. Even so, there’s still a need for players to be conversant with some of these laws, rules, and regulations so that they don’t find themselves on the wrong side of the law.
